News: Mikako Tabe, Haruma Miura to Star in “Kimi ni Todoke”

2 04 2010

The “Kimi ni Todoke” live-action film now has a cast: actress Mikako Tabe (21) and actor Haruma Miura (19) will take on the starring roles. The movie was first revealed in January, though no details were known at the time.

The original manga by Karuho Shiina has sold more than 10 million copies over 10 volumes so far, and an animated version just finished airing on NTV. The story revolves around a shy and misunderstood high school girl named Sawako Kuronuma (Tabe), whose appearance resembles the character Sadako from the horror movie “Ringu.” When Shota Kazehaya (Miura), one of the most popular boys in school, begins talking to her, her life completely changes.

Although the manga is still ongoing, the movie version is said to have an original ending. Shooting starts in late April, and the film is set to open in theaters on September 25. Naoto Kumazawa (“Rainbow Song,” “DIVE!!”) is directing.

KDramas (Ratings & Reviews): Iljimae

12 03 2010

Iljimae (일지매)

Summary: After a prediction that Lee Won Ho (이원호) will overthrow the king, he orders him killed. But Won Ho’s son, Kyum (겸) escapes. He wakes up dazed with completely no recollection of who he once was or the tragedies that befell him. A thief, Swe Dol (쇠돌) takes him in and raises him along with his wife. Somewhere along the way, Kyum – now renamed Yong (용) – remembers everything and seeks revenge for his murdered father by dressing up as the masked black thief, Iljimae, who steals for the poor from the rich. Along the way, he encounters two girls: Bang Soon and Eun Chae. There’s love and misunderstanding involved, and lots of near-misses. Starring Lee Jun Ki (이준기), Park Shi Hoo (박시후), Han Hyo Joo (한효주), Lee Young Ah (이영아).

Review: What can I say? Lee Jun Ki is extreme eye-candy *drool*. The plot definitely has some gaping holes, but I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. There’s a part of me that found annoyance in the inaccurate and evil portrayal of Chinese ambassadors (grrr) but I’ll let it slide… this time. Han Hyo Joo has awkward chemistry with Lee Jun Ki, and Lee Young Ah’s acting was a little over the top at times. But I loved Swe Dol, his face makes me feel happy. Is that possible? I didn’t think so before either. I would recommend this drama and it’s ridiculously flawed, but also ridiculously likeable.

Rating: 7.5/10

Celebrity of the Day: Inoue Mao

27 01 2010

Plenty of people have seen the extremely popular Japanese drama, Hana Yori Dango. The pretty Inoue Mao (井上 真央), born January 9, 1987, was the main actress of the drama. She has been acting for a long time, starring in small roles ever since the young age of five. But it was in 1999 in the drama, Kids War (キッズ・ウォー ~ざけんなよ~) that audiences began to really take notice of the rising star.

In 2005, Mao dominated the screens with Hana Yori Dango (花より男子) where she starred as Makino Tsukushi (牧野 つくし) alongside the band, Arashi’s, member Matsumoto Jun (松本 潤). The drama was hugely successful (note: see JDrama section for Ratings & Review) and the sequel, Hana Yori Dango Returns (花より男子 ~リターンズ~) aired in 2007 under great anticipation.

Mao enrolled in Meiji University at the age of 19 where she studied theater and literature. Her Read the rest of this entry »

JDramas (Ratings & Reviews): Hana Kimi

24 01 2010

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (花ざかりの君たちへ)

Summary: The story starts off with Ashiya Mizuki (芦屋 瑞稀) enrolling in Osaka Gakuen (桜咲学園), a school for boys. To do so, she defies her parents wishes, disguises herself as a boy, and leaves her home in the United States for Japan. Why? Because a high jumper, Sano Izumi (佐野 泉), injured himself to save her life and can’t jump anymore. And, surprise surprise, Sano goes to Osaka Gakuen. When Mizuki arrives, the residents are not as friendly as they could be, but Mizuki sticks it out. She also discovers that Sano is her roommate. At Osaka, Mizuki befriends the funny Nakatsu Shuichi (中津 秀一). To top off all the weirdness, Shuichi starts falling for Mizuki, only to wonder about his sexuality (he still thinks Mizuki is a guy) while Mizuki pursues her love with Sano. Starring Horikita Maki (堀北 真希), Oguri Shun (小栗 旬), Ikuta Toma (生田 斗真).

Review: Well, I am a very shallow person because I watched this due to its popularity. Gomen. Nobody judge me. But, to my surprise, it was rather enjoyable. I found this drama extremely funny at times. Actually, those were Read the rest of this entry »
