Abnormal Weather Cause for the High Ratings?

22 04 2010

The spring season of TV doramas has arrived and across-the-board there have been ratings higher than usual these days. Usually there is only one maybe two big doramas with ratings above 15% each season, but this time we have “Shinzanmono” (TBS) that even broke the 20% mark, “Zettai Reido” (Fuji TV) with 18% and “Keibutsu-kun” (NTV) with 17.5%. Other doramas that started one week earlier such as “Rinjo 2” and “Team Batista 2” also were able to gain higher ratings during their second week , a rare sight among doramas in general.

What’s the cause for all this? Are the doramas really that much better this season or is it something else? J-Cast thinks that the unseasonable and cold weather that is currently hanging over Japan might be the actual reason for the above average ratings. It’s not just the signs of rain that make people want to stay at home and watch TV, on the 17th it even has been snowing in Tokyo again. The city hasn’t seen snow flakes in April since 1969.

A producer from one of the five key stations in Japan on the matter: “I’m afraid to say that the abnormal weather is going to continue until Golden Week. The number of people who can’t travel to Europe because of the volcanic ash is increasing as well. On the other hand we are registering some record high ratings for most of our TV programs these days.”

The producer is optimistic that the high ratings are going to continue until at least early May. It will be interesting to watch the trend of the dorama ratings over the next couple of weeks. Yesterday the third episode of “Team Batista 2” aired and was able to improve its rating once again. Unfortunately “Zettai Reido” lost some ground this week, but it’s still close to the 15% mark.

EMERGENCY: A Call to Arms

30 01 2010

Hello everybody. Alas! This is neither a news update, a fashion blast, a download, or a review of dramas. This is a personal note from I, Calista, to everyone out there with the ability and the generous heart.

I am a great lover of Bumsso. That is, the wonderful pairing of Kim Bum and Kim So Eun (Yi Jung and Ga Eul? Boys Before Flowers? Ring any bells?). Well, So Eun has a new drama coming out called A Good Day for the Wind to Blow. Maybe you’ve heard of it? Anyway, Margaret, the amazing, tireless backbone behind the greatest Bumsso site ever (this site’s download for the 2010 Bon Juk Calendar came from her) is about to embark on the great expedition of subbing for this drama (other sites are really slow and behind on subbing for daily sitcoms).

As mentioned by her, this is not a one-man project. We need lots of help and there’s a shortage of volunteers. I’m a Chinese-English subber myself, but there are also many other positions to be filled. They are listed below:

  • Translators (Both Korean-English or Chinese-English): I can translate, but if we had more this would go a lot quicker. If I translate a 30 minute episode by myself, depending on difficulty, it can take 3-8 hours.
  • Timers: Need to know how to use subbing programs, or have motivation to learn. Also need to have decently fast internet to download the raw files to time them. If I were timing, 30 minute program would take 2-4 hours.
  • Encoder: Should have fast internet to download the raw, and encode it with the sub file. All you need is a program to do it. Usually it can take 15-30 minutes to encode an episode depending on how much memory your computer has.
  • Editor: To make sure the timing is right and the translations are correct. Shouldn’t take more than 1 hour.
  • Uploader (Should also go hand in hand with encoder): Fast internet is a must. My uploading speed maxes out at 30kb/s, so I can’t really help you there. Need to be able to download and upload the raw for the other subbers, and upload the final product to hosting sites such as MegaUpload, Mediafire, Sendspace, etc, and split the videos to upload on youtube. So someone who has fast uploading and downloading speed would be most useful.

Bumsso via Margaret

If you could help, I know that Margaret, all of the waiting viewers of this show, Bumsso website, and I would be extremely grateful. Please reply to this message, message me on my email, or go straight to Margaret’s Bumsso site to let her know you can help (www.bumsso.wordpress.com).

Thank you so much.

News: The Battle of Ratings

Taiwanese idol drama series Down With Love (就想賴著妳) which stars two mega idols, Jerry Yan (言承旭) from F4 and Ella Chen (陳嘉樺) from S.H.E will be making its debut on television screens this weekend. To instill some hype amongst viewers, the production team aired a special episode which consisted of trailers and exclusive interviews with the cast last Sunday.

The ratings for the special trailer episode raked in a meager 0.59% as compared to Jerry’s fellow F4 band member Vanness Wu’s (吳建豪) ongoing drama series, Autumn’s Concerto (下一站,幸福), which pulled in a healthy number of 7.15% in ratings.
